What is Laparoscopic Appendectomy?

Laparoscopic appendectomy is the minimally invasive surgical removal of the appendix using three to four small abdominal trocar ports.

It is the procedure of choice for both uncomplicated and many complicated cases of acute appendicitis.

Compared with open appendectomy, it offers faster return to normal activity, less postoperative pain, smaller scars and shorter hospital stay; it is particularly preferred in obese patients and women of reproductive age.

Symptoms

Acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain
Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting
Low-grade fever
Migrating pain from periumbilical region to right iliac fossa
Rebound tenderness and guarding
Elevated white blood cell count and CRP

Risk Factors

Adolescents and young adults (peak ages 10 to 30)
Family history of appendicitis
Low-fibre diet
Previous gastrointestinal infections

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent right lower quadrant pain longer than six hours
  • Pain accompanied by fever, vomiting and inability to tolerate oral intake
  • Suspicion of perforation (diffuse peritonitis, sepsis findings)
  • Pregnancy with right-sided abdominal pain (urgent imaging required)

Treatment Methods

01
Preoperative intravenous fluid resuscitation and broad-spectrum antibiotics
02
General anaesthesia, three-port standard or single incision laparoscopic technique
03
Mesoappendix division and stapler or endoloop closure of appendix base
04
Specimen extraction in retrieval bag and irrigation in complicated cases
05
Early postoperative oral intake and ambulation, discharge within 24 to 48 hours
06
Conversion to open if dense adhesions, perforation with diffuse peritonitis or anatomical difficulty
