What is Invasive Salmonella Infection?

Invasive non-typhoidal salmonellosis is a clinical presentation that occurs when Salmonella species such as Typhimurium and Enteritidis cause infection outside the gastrointestinal system.

It is more common in immunocompromised individuals (HIV, sickle cell anemia, infants, elderly). It can present with bacteremia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, and abscesses.

Early blood culture, appropriate antibiotic, and treatment of accompanying foci are important.

Symptoms

High fever and weakness
Chills and shivering
Diarrhea (sometimes absent)
Abdominal pain
Neck stiffness, altered consciousness in meningitis presentation
Bone pain (osteomyelitis)
Joint pain and swelling (septic arthritis)

Risk Factors

HIV/AIDS
Sickle cell anemia
Chronic hemolytic anemia
Young or advanced age
Gastric surgery or hypochlorhydria
Immunosuppressive treatment
Malnutrition

Treatment Methods

01
Parenteral broad-spectrum antibiotics (ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin)
02
Antibiotic selection based on culture result
03
