What is Inguinal Hernia Repair (Groin Hernia)?

Inguinal hernia is the protrusion of intra-abdominal organs (usually small intestine or omentum) through natural weak points in the groin. It is classified into two types: indirect (through the internal inguinal ring) and direct (through Hesselbach's triangle).

Lichtenstein tension-free mesh repair is the gold standard in open surgery. Laparoscopic approaches (TEP - Total Extraperitoneal and TAPP - Transabdominal Preperitoneal) are particularly advantageous in bilateral and recurrent hernias.

Incarceration (entrapment) and strangulation (interruption of blood flow) are life-threatening complications and require emergency surgery.

Symptoms

Painless or painful swelling in the groin
Swelling becoming prominent with coughing, straining, or standing
Groin pain (especially during exertion)
Swelling disappearing when lying down (reducible hernia)
Nausea and vomiting (incarcerated hernia)

Risk Factors

Chronic pain (5-10% — most common long-term issue)
Recurrence (1-3% with mesh, 10-15% without mesh)
Wound infection
Mesh infection
Testicular atrophy (ischemic orchitis)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When swelling is noticed in the groin
  • If the hernia can no longer be reduced (incarcerated hernia — emergency)
  • If severe groin pain develops with nausea and vomiting
  • If postoperative redness and discharge develop at the wound site

Treatment Methods

01
Lichtenstein mesh repair (open, polypropylene mesh)
02
Laparoscopic TEP (Total Extraperitoneal) repair
03
Laparoscopic TAPP (Transabdominal Preperitoneal) repair
04
Robotic hernia repair
05
Emergency surgery (in incarcerated/strangulated hernia)
