What is Infection Control Isolation Protocols?

Healthcare associated infections develop after forty eight hours of hospital admission or related to healthcare practices. They affect five to ten percent of inpatients in developed countries and cause significant morbidity mortality and increased costs. Implementation of comprehensive isolation protocols requires institutional infection prevention programs trained staff and dedicated infrastructure.

Implementation begins with risk assessment for each patient on admission identifying those who require contact droplet or airborne isolation. Active surveillance cultures detect colonization with multidrug resistant organisms in high risk patients allowing preemptive isolation. Cohorting infected or colonized patients in dedicated rooms or wards reduces cross transmission especially during outbreaks.

Environmental cleaning protocols include daily and terminal cleaning with hospital grade disinfectants effective against the suspected pathogen. UV light disinfection and hydrogen peroxide vapor provide adjunct measures for resistant pathogens. Antimicrobial stewardship programs reduce selection pressure for resistant organisms. Surveillance systems track healthcare associated infection rates by type and unit allowing targeted interventions and continuous quality improvement.

Limited isolation room capacity
Poor environmental cleaning compliance
Inadequate antimicrobial stewardship
Limited surveillance and audit systems

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When facility outbreak is suspected
  • When isolation room capacity is limited
  • When multidrug resistant transmission occurs
  • When protocol effectiveness is questioned
