What is Infection Control and Isolation Precautions?

Infection control precautions are evidence based practices designed to prevent healthcare associated infections. They are applied at two levels including standard precautions for all patients regardless of suspected infection status and transmission based precautions added when specific pathogens are identified or suspected. Successful implementation requires institutional commitment training and audit.

Standard precautions include hand hygiene before and after patient contact use of personal protective equipment based on anticipated exposure safe injection practices respiratory hygiene and cleaning of patient care equipment. Hand hygiene with alcohol based rub or soap and water remains the cornerstone preventing cross transmission. Proper use of gloves gowns masks and eye protection prevents healthcare worker exposure.

Transmission based precautions add contact droplet or airborne precautions specific to the pathogen. Contact precautions for organisms like methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus require gloves and gowns. Droplet precautions for influenza require surgical masks within one meter. Airborne precautions for tuberculosis require negative pressure rooms and N95 respirators. Education of patients and families enhances compliance and effectiveness.

Symptoms

Practice based not symptom based
Hospital acquired infection risk
Multidrug resistant organism colonization
Suspected infectious disease transmission
Healthcare worker exposure prevention

Risk Factors

Inadequate staffing and training
Poor hand hygiene compliance
Crowded healthcare facilities
Inadequate personal protective equipment
Lack of audit and feedback systems

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When healthcare associated infection occurs
  • When outbreak in facility is suspected
  • When transmission to healthcare worker happens
  • When isolation guidance is unclear

Treatment Methods

01
Hand hygiene before and after patient contact
02
Personal protective equipment selection by exposure risk
03
Standard precautions for all patient encounters
04
Transmission based precautions by pathogen
05
Environmental cleaning and disinfection
06
Staff training and audit programs
