What is Infantile Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Infantile seborrheic dermatitis is a benign inflammatory dermatosis affecting the scalp, face, postauricular area, neck, and diaper region, presenting with yellow oily scales and erythema.

Increased Malassezia species colonization in sebaceous glands plays a role in the pathogenesis. The infant's general condition is good, with mild or absent itching.

Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and Langerhans cell histiocytosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Symptoms

Erythematous plaques covered with oily yellow scales
Diffuse crusting on the scalp
Rash behind the ears and on the neck
Pink erythema in the diaper area
Redness in axillary and neck folds

Risk Factors

First 3 months of life
Oily scalp
Malassezia colonization
Family history

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If there is widespread redness and weeping
  • If fever and irritability accompany
  • If lesions persist longer than 6 months
  • In resistant cases not improving with care
