What is HIV: Antiretroviral Therapy Management?

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is initiated in all HIV-positive patients as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed. The goal is sustained virological suppression and preservation of immune function.

Today single-tablet integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)-based regimens are preferred. Resistance testing, viral load, CD4 count, comorbidities, and pregnancy status guide regimen selection.

Regular monitoring, adherence support, drug-drug interaction review, and management of chronic comorbidities are essential components of long-term care.

Symptoms

Opportunistic infections in advanced disease
Weight loss, fever, night sweats
Diarrhea and mucosal lesions
Neurological manifestations
Generally asymptomatic in the early phase

Risk Factors

Unprotected sexual intercourse
Intravenous drug use
Mother-to-child transmission risk
Contact with blood and blood products
Living in high-prevalence regions

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When an HIV test result is positive
  • When difficulties with ART adherence arise
  • When new opportunistic infection symptoms appear
  • When drug adverse events develop

Treatment Methods

01
INSTI-based combination therapy (e.g., bictegravir/TAF/FTC)
02
Resistance testing and individualized selection
03
Routine viral load and CD4 monitoring
04
Concurrent management of comorbidities
05
Adherence counseling
06
Vaccination and prophylaxis recommendations
