What is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for Kidney?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for kidney tumors uses extracorporeal or laparoscopic transducers to deliver focused ultrasound energy that creates rapid coagulative necrosis (above 60°C) within the targeted renal parenchyma, sparing surrounding tissue.

It represents an emerging non-invasive alternative for selected small renal masses (≤3 cm) in patients unsuitable for partial nephrectomy or thermal ablation. Image guidance with MRI or contrast-enhanced ultrasound is essential for precise targeting.

Symptoms

Most small renal masses are asymptomatic (incidental imaging)
Microscopic or macroscopic hematuria
Flank pain (in larger or symptomatic tumors)
Palpable abdominal mass (rare in early-stage)
Anemia or paraneoplastic syndromes

Risk Factors

Smoking and obesity
Hypertension and chronic kidney disease
Family history of renal cell carcinoma
Hereditary syndromes (Von Hippel-Lindau, BHD)
Long-term dialysis with acquired cystic disease
Occupational exposure (trichloroethylene, cadmium)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Renal mass detected on imaging
  • Persistent painless hematuria
  • Patient with high surgical risk seeking organ-preserving option
  • Tumor recurrence in solitary kidney
  • Surveillance findings of growth in small renal mass

Treatment Methods

01
Pre-procedure contrast MRI or CT for tumor mapping
02
Multidisciplinary tumor board evaluation for HIFU candidacy
03
Single-session HIFU under general or epidural anesthesia
04
Real-time MR thermometry or contrast ultrasound monitoring
05
Post-treatment imaging follow-up at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months
06
Salvage cryoablation, RFA or partial nephrectomy if residual disease
07
Long-term surveillance for recurrence and contralateral disease
