What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome?

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a serious zoonotic infection caused by certain hantavirus species (Sin Nombre, Andes, etc.), transmitted from rodents to humans.

The virus is transmitted by inhaling aerosols formed when feces, urine, or saliva of infected rodents dry. Human-to-human transmission (except for Andes virus) is not typical.

The prodromal period is flu-like; subsequently, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and cardiovascular collapse may develop. Supportive treatment is the main approach.

Symptoms

Sudden onset high fever
Severe muscle pain and headache
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Progressive shortness of breath
Cough and chest pain
Tachycardia and hypotension
Rapidly progressive respiratory failure

Risk Factors

Working in warehouses and cabins with rodents
Living in rural areas
Buildings with rodent infestation
Camping and nature hikes
Agriculture and forestry work
Being in hantavirus-endemic regions
Direct contact with rodent feces

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When high fever and muscle pain begin after rodent contact
  • When shortness of breath and chest tightness develop
  • When rapidly progressive respiratory distress occurs
  • If flu-like illness occurs after travel to an endemic area
  • If symptoms worsen rapidly (emergency)

Treatment Methods

01
Respiratory and circulatory support in intensive care
02
Mechanical ventilation (if needed)
03
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in advanced cases
04
Careful fluid management
05
Antiviral therapy of limited efficacy (ribavirin controversial)
06
Rodent control and protective measures
