What is Gas Gangrene (Clostridium)?

Gas gangrene (clostridial myonecrosis) is a high-mortality anaerobic infection caused by Clostridium species (especially C. perfringens) that affects deep muscle and soft tissues.

Toxin-induced gas formation in tissue and rapidly spreading necrosis are characteristic. It can occur after trauma or surgery; diabetes and vascular disease are risk factors.

Treatment must be done without delay: emergency surgical debridement, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and supportive care are essential.

Symptoms

Sudden severe pain and swelling
Purple-bronze color change in skin
Subcutaneous crepitation (gas sensation)
Foul-smelling wound discharge
High fever and systemic toxicity
Tachypnea, tachycardia, hypotension
Altered consciousness and shock

Risk Factors

Deep trauma and crush injuries
Surgery, especially bowel operations
Diabetes and vascular disease
Shrapnel and gunshot wounds
Immunosuppression
Intravenous drug use
Inadequate wound care

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If pain rapidly increases at injury site (emergency)
  • When color change and gas sensation in skin occurs
  • When high fever and altered consciousness develop
  • When foul odor and fluid discharge starts around wound
  • In rapidly worsening signs of shock

Treatment Methods

01
Emergency wide surgical debridement or amputation
02
High-dose IV penicillin G + clindamycin
03
Alternative regimens (carbapenems, metronidazole)
04
Intensive care support and fluid resuscitation
05
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (if available)
06
Measures for contact and wound cleanliness
