What is Fibrocystic Breast Disease?

Fibrocystic breast disease is the most common benign breast disorder in women of reproductive age. Disruption of estrogen-progesterone balance leads to cyst formation, fibrosis, adenosis, and epithelial hyperplasia in the breast.

It is characterized by breast pain, tenderness, and nodularity that are pronounced during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. It is most often seen in women aged 30-50 years, and complaints decrease with menopause.

Cancer risk is mostly not increased; however, it may rise in cases with atypical hyperplasia. Examination, breast ultrasound, mammography, and biopsy when needed are used in diagnosis. Treatment is generally symptomatic.
