What is Fibroadenoma?

Fibroadenoma is the most common benign breast tumor seen in young women aged 15-35 years. It consists of well-encapsulated, mobile, and painless masses formed by proliferation of epithelial and stromal tissue.

It is hormone-sensitive: it may grow during pregnancy and shrink after menopause. It is mostly 1-3 cm in diameter and unilateral. Giant fibroadenomas and juvenile fibroadenomas are recognized subtypes.

Breast ultrasound and tru-cut biopsy are used in diagnosis. Small asymptomatic masses can be observed; surgical excision is performed in growing, symptomatic, or atypia-containing cases. Malignant transformation is very rare.
