What is Fecal Incontinence Surgery?

Fecal incontinence is defined as involuntary leakage of gas, liquid, or solid stool and causes serious social and psychological effects. It most commonly develops due to obstetric sphincter injury, pelvic floor dysfunction, age-related changes, and neurological disorders.

Surgical treatment is considered in patients who do not respond to medical and conservative treatments (diet, fiber-rich nutrition, biofeedback, physical therapy). Surgical options include sphincteroplasty, sacral neuromodulation, artificial bowel sphincter, and colostomy.

Treatment is individualized; the location of sphincter damage, the patient's functional status, and expectations are considered. Sacral neuromodulation is a minimally invasive option that has produced successful results in recent years.
