What is Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever?

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is the severe clinical form of dengue virus infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. It can develop with secondary infection and depending on the patient's immune profile.

It is characterized by thrombocytopenia, increased vascular permeability, hemoconcentration with elevated hematocrit, and findings of plasma leakage such as pleural effusion and ascites.

Early recognition, careful fluid management, and supportive care determine prognosis and reduce mortality.

Symptoms

High fever and retro-orbital pain
Severe muscle and bone pain
Petechiae and ecchymoses
Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
Pleural effusion and ascites

Risk Factors

Travel to tropical regions
Prior dengue infection (secondary infection)

Heavy mosquito exposure
Living in epidemic settings
