What is Cysticercosis?

Cysticercosis is caused by ingestion of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) eggs through contaminated water or food. The larvae (cysticerci) migrate to muscle, subcutaneous tissue, the eye and the central nervous system, producing a serious parasitic disease.

Cysts in the central nervous system cause neurocysticercosis, which is the leading preventable cause of epilepsy worldwide. The cysts may be viable, degenerating or calcified and may remain silent for many years.

The disease is endemic in Latin America, Africa and Asia and is increasingly seen in developed countries through migration and travel. Diagnosis is based on imaging and serology; treatment is tailored to the type and location of the lesion.
