What is Chronic HIV Management?

Chronic HIV infection is a lifelong condition managed in the era of antiretroviral therapy (ART). With consistent adherence, life expectancy can approach that of the general population.

Care includes monitoring of viral load and CD4, surveillance for drug toxicity, screening for opportunistic infections, vaccination and management of metabolic and cardiovascular risk.

Psychosocial support, sexual health and prevention of transmission are integral parts of care.

Symptoms

Often stable and asymptomatic
New symptoms related to side effects
Signs of opportunistic infection (with poor adherence)
Metabolic changes
Lipodystrophy
Cardiovascular events
Psychological distress and depression

Risk Factors

Poor ART adherence
Polypharmacy and drug interactions
Comorbidity (HBV, HCV, TB)
Smoking and alcohol use
Metabolic syndrome
Advanced immunosuppression
Social isolation
