What is Chlamydia trachomatis Infection?

Chlamydia infection is caused by the obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is transmitted sexually as well as perinatally.

It is often asymptomatic in women and can extend from the cervix to the urethra, endometrium and fallopian tubes. In men it causes urethritis and epididymitis.

Untreated cases face the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, chronic pelvic pain and ectopic pregnancy. It can also cause neonatal conjunctivitis and pneumonia.

Symptoms

Asymptomatic in most patients
Mild vaginal discharge and dysuria
Watery urethral discharge in men
Postcoital and intermenstrual bleeding
Pelvic pain
Rectal pain and discharge
Reactive arthritis (rare)

Risk Factors

Younger age (under 25)
Multiple partners
New sexual partner
Inconsistent condom use
History of other STIs
Sex work
Perinatal exposure

  • If abdominal pain and fever develop
  • If you notice postcoital bleeding
  • For screening after a new partner
  • As routine antenatal screening in pregnancy
  • If a partner has been diagnosed with chlamydia
