What is Capillary Vascular Malformation?

Capillary vascular malformations are developmental disorders of congenital vascular structures resulting from dilation of superficial dermal capillaries. Port-wine stain is the best-known form.

They can be associated with syndromes such as Sturge-Weber and Klippel-Trenaunay; trigeminal dermatome distribution is a warning sign for systemic involvement.

Early laser therapy is important for aesthetic and psychosocial reasons.

Symptoms

Flat pink or purple lesion noticed at birth
Thickening and darkening over time
Frequently unilateral location on the face and neck
Becoming more prominent in response to emotional stress

Risk Factors

Sporadic GNAQ mosaicism
Sturge-Weber syndrome
Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome
Positive family history (rare)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If there is widespread capillary malformation on the face
  • If seizures or developmental delay accompany
  • If the lesion thickens and shows bleeding tendency
  • If extremity growth asymmetry is observed

Treatment Methods

01
Pulsed dye laser sessions
02
Initiating laser at an early age
03
Systemic evaluation (ophthalmology, neurology)
04
