What is Blepharochalasis?

Blepharochalasis is a rare disorder beginning at a young age and characterized by recurrent painless periorbital edema attacks. Episodes generally regress spontaneously within days, but recurrent edema causes permanent thinning, wrinkling, and drooping of the eyelid skin. The upper eyelid is most often affected. Lacrimal gland prolapse may develop. Diagnosis is clinical, and hereditary angioedema must be excluded in the differential diagnosis.

Symptoms

Recurrent painless eyelid swelling
Thin, wrinkled, and sagging eyelid skin
Sense of upper eyelid heaviness
Discoloration of the eyelid skin
Lacrimal gland prolapse (late stage)

Risk Factors

Onset at a young age (puberty)
Family history
Atopic predisposition
Recurrent ocular allergy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If recurrent eyelid swelling is occurring
  • If permanent eyelid sagging has developed
  • If the visual field is becoming restricted

Treatment Methods

01
Cold compresses during attacks
02
Antihistamines (during flare-ups)
03
Blepharoplasty (surgery for permanent lid sagging)
04
Lacrimal gland fixation (when prolapsed)
05
Long-term follow-up and cosmetic evaluation
