What is Bladder Diverticulum?

Bladder diverticulum is a pouch-like outpouching protruding outward through weak points of the bladder wall. It can be congenital (primary) or acquired (secondary).

Acquired forms generally develop on the basis of bladder outlet obstruction such as BPH, neurogenic bladder, urethral stricture. The diverticulum wall contains only mucosa and serosa, with no muscle layer.

Due to urinary stasis, it can lead to complications such as infection, stone formation, and rarely carcinoma development inside the diverticulum.

Symptoms

Recurrent urinary tract infections
Hematuria
Two-stage urination
Sensation of incomplete emptying
Lower abdominal pain
Difficulty voiding
Urinary retention (in large diverticula)

Risk Factors

BPH and bladder outlet obstruction
Neurogenic bladder
Urethral stricture
Male sex
Advanced age
Congenital bladder anomalies
Connective tissue diseases (Ehlers-Danlos)
