What is Bariatric Surgery (Obesity Surgery)?

Bariatric surgery is the general name for surgical weight-loss methods applied in individuals with body mass index (BMI) over 40 kg/m², or over 35 kg/m² with obesity-related comorbidities (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea).

These methods increase satiety by reducing gastric volume, positively affect metabolism by altering intestinal hormones, and reduce calorie intake or absorption. They are applied only in cases where diet and exercise are insufficient.

Successful bariatric surgery can achieve 60-80% loss of excess weight, remission of type 2 diabetes, and improvement of hypertension and sleep apnea. Comprehensive preoperative evaluation and long-term follow-up are essential.

Symptoms

BMI ≥40 kg/m² (morbid obesity)
BMI ≥35 kg/m² with diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea
Restrictions in daily activities and serious decrease in quality of life
Joint pain, limited mobility
Depression and psychosocial problems
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Risk Factors

Genetic predisposition and family history
Physical inactivity and high-calorie diet
Hormonal disorders (hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome)
Psychological factors and emotional eating
Long-term use of certain drugs (corticosteroids)
Inadequate sleep pattern

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If BMI ≥40 or ≥35 with comorbidity
  • If diet and exercise programs have not produced results
  • If obesity-related health problems are worsening
  • For bariatric surgery pre-evaluation with a multidisciplinary team
  • If current drug therapy is insufficient

Treatment Methods

01
Sleeve gastrectomy: creating a tube-shaped small stomach by removing 75-80% of the stomach
02
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: creating a small gastric pouch and reconnecting the small intestine (both restrictive and malabsorptive)
03
Adjustable gastric band: placement of an adjustable and removable silicone band
04
Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS): method with predominantly malabsorptive component
05
Preoperative psychological, dietitian, and anesthesia evaluation
06
Lifetime vitamin-mineral supplementation and regular follow-up after surgery
