What is Amblyopia Treatment?

Amblyopia is reduced best-corrected visual acuity in one or both eyes from abnormal visual cortical development during the critical period (birth to age 7-9 years), occurring without structural ocular pathology.

Causes include strabismus (most common), anisometropia (unequal refractive error), high bilateral ametropia, deprivation (cataract, ptosis), and combined mechanisms; early diagnosis and treatment provide best outcomes with diminishing efficacy after age 9-10.

Treatment principles — first correct any refractive error with glasses for 4-16 weeks (refractive adaptation often improves vision alone), then patch better eye 2-6 hours daily based on age and severity, or use atropine 1% drops once weekly to dominant eye for moderate amblyopia; recent evidence supports treatment success even in older children although less complete.

Symptoms

Reduced visual acuity in one or both eyes
Difficulty seeing 3D and depth perception
Eye misalignment (strabismus) or wandering eye
Squinting or closing one eye to see better
Tilting head or turning face to one side
Difficulty with reading and academic performance
Often asymptomatic and detected on screening

Risk Factors

Strabismus (esotropia, exotropia)
Anisometropia >1.0 D hyperopia, 1.5 D astigmatism, 3.0 D myopia
High bilateral hyperopia >5.0 D or astigmatism >2.5 D
Visual deprivation — congenital cataract, ptosis, hemangioma
Family history of amblyopia or strabismus
Premature birth and low birth weight
Failure of routine pediatric vision screening

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Failed pediatric vision screening
  • Suspicion of strabismus (eye drift or turn)
  • Visible eye misalignment or asymmetry
  • Difficulty seeing or squinting in one eye
  • Family history of amblyopia or strabismus
  • Head tilting, face turning, or chin elevation
  • Routine 6-month and 4-year vision check

Treatment Methods

01
Refractive adaptation — full cycloplegic refraction in glasses for 4-16 weeks
02
Occlusion therapy — patching better eye 2-6 hours daily for 4-6 months
03
Atropine penalization — 1% atropine drops once weekly in dominant eye
04
Combined approaches and adjunctive vision therapy
05
Treatment of underlying cause (strabismus surgery, cataract removal)
06
Dichoptic training and digital binocular therapies in older children
07
Long-term follow-up to monitor for regression and ensure stability

Anaemia

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Anaemia is a low haemoglobin level that reduces oxygen delivery, causing fatigue, pallor, and shortness of breath. It is not a disease itself but a sign of many underlying conditions. Most cases are correctable with appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Iron Deficiency Anaemia

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Iron deficiency anaemia develops when dietary intake, absorption, or losses create an iron shortfall, most often affecting women and children. Identifying the underlying cause is the core of management, alongside iron replacement.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause megaloblastic anaemia, neurological symptoms, and cognitive impairment. Early treatment with intramuscular or oral B12 largely prevents irreversible complications.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) Management

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Hypertension is often called the silent killer because it progresses symptom-free for years and can damage the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes. Regular monitoring, lifestyle change, and evidence-based drug therapy dramatically reduce cardiovascular risk.

Chronic Kidney Disease

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Chronic kidney disease is one of the most common complications of chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, and can be silent in its early stages.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Hepatitis B is a DNA virus infection causing acute and chronic hepatitis with risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma; diagnosis integrates HBsAg, HBeAg, anti-HBc, and HBV DNA with management based on disease phase using nucleos(t)ide analogues (entecavir, tenofovir) and universal infant vaccination.

Hepatitis C (HCV)

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Hepatitis C is an RNA virus causing chronic hepatitis that may progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma; modern direct-acting antiviral (DAA) pangenotypic regimens (sofosbuvir/velpatasvir, glecaprevir/pibrentasvir) achieve sustained virologic response over 95% in 8–12 weeks with universal adult screening and cure for nearly all patients.

Fatty Liver Disease

Dahiliye (İç Hastalıkları)

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely related to obesity and metabolic syndrome and is largely reversible with early treatment.
