What is Adult Immunization Program from Infectious Disease Perspective?

Adult immunization aims to provide lifelong protection beyond childhood immunization. Many adults have not received booster doses of childhood vaccines have not benefited from newly developed vaccines like zoster and respiratory syncytial virus or have not completed risk specific vaccinations. Adult vaccination rates remain significantly lower than pediatric coverage in most countries.

Routine adult vaccines include annual influenza for all adults pneumococcal vaccination for those over sixty five and high risk patients zoster vaccine for adults over fifty and tetanus diphtheria pertussis booster every ten years. Risk group specific vaccines include hepatitis A and B for at risk individuals HPV up to age forty five meningococcal for college students and travelers and rabies pre exposure prophylaxis for veterinarians and travelers.

Special populations require tailored approaches including immunocompromised patients pregnant women travelers and healthcare workers. Live vaccines are contraindicated in immunocompromise but inactivated vaccines remain safe and recommended. Pregnant women should receive influenza and tetanus diphtheria pertussis vaccines. Healthcare workers require hepatitis B varicella measles mumps rubella and annual influenza vaccines. Documentation of prior immunizations and titer testing when indicated guide individual vaccination plans.
