What is Adrenal (Suprarenal) Adrenalectomy?

Adrenalectomy is the surgical removal of one or both adrenal glands. It is performed for hormone-secreting tumors (pheochromocytoma, Cushing syndrome, primary hyperaldosteronism) or tumors with malignancy potential.

Modern surgical approaches include laparoscopic transabdominal, retroperitoneoscopic and robotic adrenalectomy. Open surgery is reserved for large tumors (>6 cm), suspected malignancy, or extensive vascular invasion.

Particular care is required in pheochromocytoma surgery: catecholamine surges during tumor manipulation may cause hypertensive crises. Preoperative alpha-blockade and intraoperative anesthetic management are critical.

Symptoms

Hypertension (pheochromocytoma)
Cushingoid features
Hypokalemia (hyperaldosteronism)
Adrenal mass
Increased urinary catecholamines
Resistant hypertension
Incidental adrenal mass

Risk Factors

Adrenal tumors >4 cm
Functional adenoma
Pheochromocytoma
Primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn)
Adrenocortical carcinoma
MEN syndromes

Treatment Methods

01
