A removable type of denture that the patient can take out and put back in, used when some teeth are missing but natural teeth are still present.
Indication
- Loss of more than one tooth in the jaw with natural teeth still present
- Extensive tooth loss for which an implant or bridge is not suitable
- Inability to perform a fixed prosthesis due to insufficient bone
- Systemic or surgical contraindications
- Use as a temporary solution (transition period before/after implants)
- Patient preference or financial reasons
Preparation
- Clinical examination and panoramic X-ray
- Assessment of the health status of the existing teeth
- Treating gum disease, decay or root canal problems beforehand
- Suitability assessment of the supporting teeth
- Prosthesis design: clasp-retained (classic) or precision attachment
How it's performed
- Impressions are taken at the first session
- Jaw relation and bite records are made
- A metal framework or acrylic base is fabricated according to the design
- A wax try-in is performed and the patient's approval is obtained
- Laboratory production is completed
- The denture is tried in the mouth, the fit of the clasps is checked and it is delivered
Post-procedure
- Adaptation period of 1-3 weeks
- Starting with soft foods is recommended in the first few days
- After each meal the denture and the natural teeth are cleaned separately
- The denture is removed at night and stored properly
- A check-up visit in the first week to address pressure points
- Annual check-ups; assessment for renewal every 5-7 years
Risks
- Long-term risk of caries on teeth that the clasps contact (if hygiene is inadequate)
- Temporary gum sores due to pressure points
- Visibility of the metal clasps as an aesthetic concern (classic type)
- Excessive load on the supporting teeth
- Mismatch over time due to bone resorption
FAQ
What is the difference between a clasp-retained and a precision-attachment denture?
In a clasp-retained denture the retainer hooks around the existing tooth and may be aesthetically visible. A precision-attachment denture uses special mechanisms (attachments); the clasps are not visible, but the supporting teeth need to be crowned and the cost is higher.
Can the denture stay in place all day?
Daytime use is appropriate, but it is recommended to remove and clean the denture at night and to allow the tissues to rest.
Will it harm my natural teeth?
It will not cause harm with regular oral care. However, with inadequate cleaning, decay and gum problems can develop in the areas the clasps contact.
Can a partial denture be made instead of an implant?
Yes, it is a reasonable alternative, especially in patients for whom implants are not suitable due to insufficient bone or systemic conditions. The decision is made together after clinical evaluation.
