What is Travel Medicine Consultation — Pre-Travel Health Assessment?

Travel medicine is a multidisciplinary field focused on health risks associated with international travel and the prevention or management of travel-related illnesses. The pre-travel consultation provides comprehensive risk assessment based on traveler characteristics (age, comorbidities, immune status, pregnancy), destination-specific epidemiology, planned activities, accommodations, and trip duration.

Vaccination strategy includes routine vaccines (ensuring up-to-date status of MMR, Tdap, influenza, varicella, COVID-19), required vaccines (yellow fever for endemic areas, meningococcal for Hajj pilgrimage, polio for selected destinations under WHO requirements), and recommended vaccines based on itinerary risk (hepatitis A and B, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis, cholera). The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) documents required immunizations.

Malaria chemoprophylaxis selection considers destination-specific Plasmodium species and resistance patterns: atovaquone-proguanil and doxycycline are preferred for most chloroquine-resistant areas, mefloquine remains an option in selected regions, while chloroquine is reserved for the few remaining sensitive areas. Tafenoquine offers extended-interval dosing for select travelers. Personal protective measures including DEET-containing repellents, permethrin-treated clothing, and bed nets remain essential. Comprehensive travel medicine also addresses traveler's diarrhea (food/water hygiene, self-treatment azithromycin), altitude illness (acetazolamide prophylaxis), deep vein thrombosis prevention, mental health, and post-travel illness evaluation.

Symptoms

Travel-related symptoms requiring evaluation: fever, diarrhea, rash
Persistent symptoms after international travel
Vaccine-preventable disease symptoms
Malaria symptoms: cyclical fever, chills, headache
Traveler's diarrhea with severe dehydration or bloody stools
Altitude illness symptoms: headache, nausea, dyspnea
Animal exposure requiring rabies post-exposure prophylaxis

Risk Factors

Destination-specific endemic disease risk
Planned outdoor activities, rural travel, adventure travel
Visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travelers (higher risk)
Pregnancy with altered medication tolerance
Immunocompromised state with reduced vaccine response
Pediatric or geriatric age extremes
Chronic medical conditions affecting fitness for travel

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Ideally 4-6 weeks before international travel
  • Earlier consultation needed for multiple vaccines or complex itineraries
  • Last-minute travel with limited preparation time
  • Post-travel fever or persistent symptoms
  • Pregnancy planning international travel
  • Immunocompromised patients planning travel
  • Pediatric travelers requiring age-specific recommendations

Treatment Methods

01
Comprehensive pre-travel risk assessment 4-6 weeks before departure
02
Routine vaccine updates and travel-specific immunizations
03
Yellow fever vaccination at certified clinics with ICVP documentation
04
Malaria chemoprophylaxis selected by destination resistance patterns
05
Traveler's diarrhea prevention education and azithromycin self-treatment
06
Altitude illness prophylaxis with acetazolamide for high-altitude destinations
07
Post-travel evaluation for fever or persistent symptoms

Hepatitis A (HAV)

Enfeksiyon Hastalıkları

Hepatitis A is an acute, self-limited liver infection transmitted via the fecal-oral route causing acute hepatitis without chronicity; supportive care suffices in most cases, while vaccination prevents outbreaks and post-exposure prophylaxis within 2 weeks is effective.

Hepatitis B

Enfeksiyon Hastalıkları

Hepatitis B is a contagious infection caused by HBV virus transmitted via blood, sexual intercourse, and mother-to-child, that can become chronic and progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
