What is Smoking and Lung Health?

Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, at least 70 of which are carcinogenic. The main effects of smoking on the lungs are chronic airway inflammation, emphysema (destruction of air sacs), chronic bronchitis, and lung cancer. Together, these changes constitute the picture of COPD.

Smoking increases the risk of lung cancer 15-30 times compared with non-smokers. Heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, and cervix are also linked to smoking.

Quitting smoking begins delivering health benefits from the moment you stop. Within 10-15 years, lung cancer risk approaches the level of non-smokers.

Symptoms

Chronic productive morning cough
Shortness of breath on exertion or at rest
Recurrent bronchitis and pneumonia
Wheezing and chest tightness
Reduced sense of smell and taste
Early fatigue and decreased exercise capacity
Long-term: hemoptysis, weight loss (cancer signs)

Risk Factors

Smoking (any form: cigarettes, pipe, cigar, hookah)
Passive smoke exposure
Early-age initiation and long-term smoking
High nicotine dependence
Concurrent alcohol use
Combination with occupational irritant exposure
Persons who have previously tried to quit but failed
