What is Small Cell Lung Cancer?

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine-origin tumor accounting for approximately 15% of all lung cancers. Its association with smoking is exceptionally strong, and it shows a marked tendency for early metastasis.

It is classified as limited-stage (single hemithorax plus regional lymph nodes) and extensive-stage disease. SCLC is highly chemosensitive but responses are typically transient. Adding immunotherapy has improved overall survival in extensive-stage disease.

Symptoms

Rapidly progressive cough and dyspnea
Hemoptysis
Superior vena cava syndrome
Paraneoplastic syndromes (SIADH, Cushing)
Rapid weight loss

Risk Factors

Heavy smoking (>30 pack-years)
Asbestos exposure
Radon gas exposure
Family history of lung cancer

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Rapidly progressive respiratory symptoms
  • Signs of SVC syndrome (facial edema, neck venous distention)
  • Findings suggesting paraneoplastic syndromes

Treatment Methods

01
Limited-stage: etoposide + cisplatin with concurrent thoracic radiotherapy
02
Extensive-stage: chemotherapy plus immunotherapy (atezolizumab or durvalumab)
03
Prophylactic cranial irradiation after complete response
04
Second-line: topotecan or lurbinectedin
05
Radiotherapy for brain metastasis
06
Supportive care and palliative measures
