What is Pneumoconiosis?

Pneumoconiosis is the general name for occupational lung diseases that develop as a result of accumulation of inhaled inorganic dust particles in the lungs. Silicosis (silica dust), anthracosis (coal dust), and asbestosis are the most important forms.

Particles activate macrophages in the alveoli, initiating chronic inflammation and fibrosis. Radiological findings (nodules, conglomerate masses) may precede symptoms.

The disease may continue to progress even after exposure ends. Silicosis increases the risk of tuberculosis; asbestosis is associated with mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Symptoms

Slowly developing shortness of breath
Chronic cough
Chest tightness with exertion
Shortness of breath at rest in advanced stages
Rapid progression and severe respiratory failure in acute silicosis
Clubbing of fingertips

Risk Factors

Rock drilling, mining, sandblasting (silicosis)
Coal mine workers (anthracosis)
Asbestos insulation and construction workers (asbestosis)
Long exposure duration and high dust concentration
Smoking (multiplies damage)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Regular radiological screening if working in high-risk occupation
  • When shortness of breath or cough begins, occupational physician and pulmonology
  • For tuberculosis screening in silicosis
  • Mesothelioma follow-up in asbestosis history

Treatment Methods

01
Cessation of exposure and workplace safety measures
02
Symptomatic treatment: bronchodilators, oxygen therapy
03
Tuberculosis prophylaxis and treatment in silicosis
04
Pulmonary rehabilitation
05
Lung transplant evaluation in advanced pulmonary fibrosis
