What is Lung Cancer Screening Program?

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is a screening modality proven to reduce lung cancer mortality by 20-24% in high-risk individuals. The NLST and NELSON trials demonstrated this survival benefit.

Eligibility includes individuals aged 50-80 years with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Annual LDCT is performed for these candidates.

Symptoms

Screening targets asymptomatic high-risk individuals
Symptomatic patients require diagnostic CT instead

Risk Factors

Smoking history of at least 20 pack-years
Age between 50 and 80 years
Quit smoking within the last 15 years
Additional risks: family history of lung cancer, COPD, radon exposure

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Eligible individuals should present for screening
  • Follow-up of nodules detected during screening
  • Integration of smoking cessation counseling with screening

Treatment Methods

01
Annual LDCT screening (radiation dose less than 1.5 mSv)
02
Lung-RADS classification for nodule management
03
Lung-RADS 1-2: continue annual screening
04
Lung-RADS 3: 6-month follow-up CT
05
Lung-RADS 4A/B: PET-CT or biopsy
