What is Prevention of Hyperoxia-Induced Lung Injury?

Treatment with FiO2 >60% for longer than 24-48 hours carries a risk of lung injury. In COPD, the SpO2 target is 88-92%, while in other acute conditions the target is 94-98%.

Specific situations such as bleomycin chemotherapy require even tighter limitation of FiO2 (<30%). Hyperoxia can cause substernal pain, cough, atelectasis, and an ARDS-like picture.
