What is Chronic Bronchitis?

Chronic bronchitis is a clinical syndrome defined by daily productive cough for at least 3 months a year for 2 consecutive years. It is an important component of COPD.

Long-term smoking is the main cause; however, occupational dust and chemical exposure, air pollution, and recurrent respiratory infections also predispose to chronic bronchitis.

The disease is characterized by airway obstruction and recurrent acute exacerbations. Exacerbations may lead to hospitalization and rapid decline of lung function.

Symptoms

Productive cough especially in the morning
Dyspnea (begins on exertion, progresses)
Wheezing
Recurrent lung infections
Fatigue and exercise intolerance
Darker sputum during acute exacerbations

Risk Factors

Smoking (most important risk factor)
Exposure to second-hand smoke
Occupational dust, chemical, and fume exposure
Air pollution
Recurrent childhood respiratory infections

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pulmonology consultation when chronic productive cough begins
  • Spirometry evaluation if dyspnea develops
  • During acute exacerbations (sputum darkening, increased dyspnea)
  • Urgently if sputum contains blood or weight loss accompanies

Treatment Methods

01
Smoking cessation — most effective and primary intervention
02
Inhaled bronchodilators (LABA, LAMA) and inhaled steroids
03
Antibiotics and oral steroids during exacerbations
04
Pulmonary rehabilitation
05
Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines
