What is Bronchoscopy for Diagnosis and Treatment?

Flexible bronchoscopy uses a steerable fiberoptic or video bronchoscope under conscious sedation for inspection, lavage, brushings, transbronchial biopsy and therapeutic interventions; rigid bronchoscopy provides large-channel access under general anesthesia for hemoptysis control, foreign body retrieval and tumor coring.

Endobronchial ultrasound (linear EBUS) enables real-time mediastinal and hilar nodal staging via TBNA; radial EBUS and electromagnetic navigation guide peripheral nodule sampling.

Therapeutic bronchoscopy includes laser/APC ablation, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, brachytherapy, balloon dilatation and silicone or self-expanding metal stent placement for central airway obstruction.

Symptoms

Persistent unexplained cough
Hemoptysis
Suspected lung cancer or lymphadenopathy
Foreign body aspiration suspicion
Symptomatic central airway obstruction

Risk Factors

Bleeding diathesis or anticoagulation
Severe hypoxemia (SpO2 below 90% on room air)
Recent acute coronary syndrome
Uncontrolled airway obstruction
Severe pulmonary hypertension

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Indeterminate pulmonary nodule needing tissue
  • Mediastinal lymphadenopathy on imaging
  • Persistent atelectasis or airway lesion
  • Hemoptysis or stridor evaluation
  • Difficult-to-treat infection requiring sampling

Treatment Methods

01
Pre-procedure coagulation, oxygenation and consent assessment
02
Flexible bronchoscopy with BAL, brushings, TBLB or EBUS-TBNA
03
Rigid bronchoscopy for hemoptysis or large-airway intervention
04
Therapeutic ablation, dilatation or stenting as indicated
05
Post-procedure observation for bleeding and pneumothorax
06
Multidisciplinary tumor board integration for staging results
