What is Berylliosis?

Berylliosis is a granulomatous lung disease that develops as a result of occupational exposure to beryllium and its compounds. While the acute form produces a pneumonia-like picture with high-dose exposure, chronic berylliosis progresses similarly to sarcoidosis.

Chronic berylliosis occurs in genetically susceptible individuals (HLA-DPB1 Glu69) by a CD4+ T-cell-mediated delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to beryllium. Noncaseating granulomas and fibrosis develop in the lungs.

Diagnosis is made by the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT), occupational history, and lung biopsy. Treatment consists of cessation of beryllium exposure and corticosteroids.

Symptoms

Chronic cough
Exertional dyspnea
Chest pain
Weight loss
Night sweats
Fatigue
Finger clubbing (advanced)

Risk Factors

Aerospace, space, and electronics industry
Beryllium mining and ceramic production
Nuclear weapons industry
Dental laboratories
HLA-DPB1 Glu69 positivity
Long-term low-concentration exposure
Smoking

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • New respiratory symptoms in those with beryllium exposure
  • Sarcoidosis-like CT findings
  • Unexplained granulomatous disease
  • Positive BeLPT in occupational screening
  • Chronic cough and weight loss

Treatment Methods

01
Cessation of beryllium exposure
02
Oral corticosteroids
03
Methotrexate (steroid-sparing)
04
Oxygen therapy
05
Pulmonary rehabilitation
06
Occupational disease reporting and follow-up
