What is Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are superficial leg veins that have become dilated and twisted, appearing as blue-purple cords under the skin. Incompetent venous valves allow blood to flow backward, increasing pressure within the vein.

They occur predominantly in the legs because veins that carry blood upward against gravity are exposed to the highest pressures there. In addition to superficial varicosities, chronic venous insufficiency can also involve the deep venous system.

Untreated severe varicose veins can lead to skin ulcers, superficial thrombophlebitis, and an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Symptoms

Visible dilated blue-purple veins on the legs
Ankle swelling (especially in the evening)
A sense of heaviness, tiredness, and aching in the legs
Itching and burning in the legs
Nighttime leg cramps
Skin discoloration (brownish pigmentation)
Non-healing leg ulcers in advanced cases

Risk Factors

Family history of varicose veins
Female sex and pregnancy
Prolonged standing at work (nurses, teachers, butchers, etc.)
Obesity
Advanced age
History of deep vein thrombosis
Hormonal therapy or oral contraceptives

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If varicose veins cause swelling or pain
  • If skin color is changing or an ulcer is developing
  • If the vein becomes hard and red (thrombophlebitis)
  • If ankle swelling worsens through the day
  • When interventional treatment is being considered (vascular surgery or interventional cardiology)

Treatment Methods

01
Compression stockings (the cornerstone of conservative therapy)
02
Leg elevation and avoiding prolonged standing
03
Weight loss and regular walking
04
Sclerotherapy (closure of small varices with a chemical agent)
05
Endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation (least invasive surgical alternative)
06
Conventional surgical stripping (for severe great saphenous vein incompetence)
