What is Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)?

Hypertension is a condition in which the force of blood against artery walls remains above normal levels. Readings of 140/90 mmHg or higher are considered high blood pressure. Affecting roughly one in three adults worldwide, it is often called the 'silent killer' because it can progress for years without obvious symptoms.

Primary (essential) hypertension, which has no single identifiable cause, accounts for 90–95% of all cases. The remainder, known as secondary hypertension, results from identifiable conditions such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders, or the use of certain medications.

Untreated high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and vision loss. With regular monitoring and lifestyle changes, the condition can generally be brought under control.
