What is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI/TAVR)?

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) delivers a bioprosthetic aortic valve via catheter without the need for open-heart surgery in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. It is usually performed through the femoral artery.

Originally reserved for high-surgical-risk and inoperable patients, current evidence shows that TAVI is safe and effective in intermediate- and low-risk patients as well. Indications continue to expand.

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia or sedation; hospital stay is significantly shorter than surgical valve replacement. Early mobilization and rapid recovery are key advantages.

Post-TAVI antithrombotic therapy, follow-up of conduction disturbances and regular prosthetic valve function assessment are essential parts of long-term care.

Symptoms

TAVI-eligible aortic stenosis patients typically have:
Dyspnea at rest or with exertion
Chest pain (angina)
Syncope or dizziness
Heart failure symptoms
Reduced exercise capacity

Risk Factors

Vascular complications (bleeding, dissection)
Conduction disturbances requiring permanent pacemaker (5–25%)
Paravalvular leak
Stroke risk (1–3%)
Acute kidney injury (contrast nephropathy)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Patients with severe aortic stenosis should be evaluated for TAVI
  • New palpitations, syncope or dyspnea after TAVI
  • Leg pain, swelling or bleeding after the procedure

Treatment Methods

01
TAVI procedure (transfemoral, transapical or alternative access)
02
Dual antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy after the procedure
03
Monitoring of conduction disturbances (ECG and telemetry)
04
Regular echocardiographic assessment of the prosthesis
05
Endocarditis prophylaxis
06
Referral to cardiac rehabilitation
