What is Right Ventricular Function Assessment?

The right ventricle (RV) is a cardiac chamber that is more challenging to evaluate than the left ventricle due to structural and functional differences. RV dysfunction has prognostic importance in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and many cardiopulmonary diseases.

TAPSE (tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion), FAC (fractional area change), tricuspid S' velocity, and RV global longitudinal strain are key assessment parameters. Cardiac MRI is the gold standard for measuring RV volume and EF.

Symptoms

Peripheral edema and ascites
Jugular venous distension
Hepatomegaly and hepatojugular reflux
Exercise intolerance
Syncope (in severe RV failure)

Risk Factors

Pulmonary hypertension
Left heart failure
Pulmonary embolism
ARVC (arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy)
Congenital heart diseases
Post-lung transplantation

When to See a Doctor?
