What is Pacemaker and MRI Compatibility?

Modern MR-conditional pacemakers and ICDs allow 1.5T MRI scanning when specific conditions are met. The device is programmed to MRI mode and returned to its original settings after the procedure.

MRI is generally contraindicated in older-generation MR non-conditional devices. Lead heating, device damage, and programming changes are potential risks. 3T MRI is still contraindicated for most devices.

Symptoms

Patient with pacemaker/ICD implant requiring MRI
Need for neurological evaluation (brain MRI)
Orthopedic evaluation
Oncologic staging

Risk Factors

Older generation (MR non-conditional) device
Presence of abandoned (unremoved old) leads
Epicardial leads
Less than 6 weeks since device implantation
3T MRI (contraindicated for most devices)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Device compatibility check in patients requiring MRI
  • Device card and model verification (MR-conditional?)
  • Pre-MRI electrophysiology consultation

Treatment Methods

01
Determination of device type (MR-conditional vs non-conditional)
02
In MR-conditional device: activation of MRI mode
03
1.5T MRI (safe in approved devices)
04
Return device to original settings after procedure
05
In MR non-conditional device: risk-benefit analysis and multidisciplinary decision
06
Evaluation of alternative imaging modalities (CT, ultrasound)
