What is Myocarditis?

Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle (the myocardium). It most commonly develops after viral infections (Coxsackievirus, influenza, COVID-19, and others). Bacterial and fungal infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications can also cause myocarditis.

The inflammation damages the heart muscle and can lead to reduced pump function, arrhythmias and, in severe cases, dilated cardiomyopathy.

Mild cases often recover, while severe myocarditis may require intensive care. Early diagnosis and rest are essential.

Symptoms

Chest pain or a sense of pressure
Shortness of breath
Palpitations and rhythm disturbances
Fatigue and weakness
Preceding signs of a viral illness (fever, sore throat)
Leg swelling (in advanced cases)
Sudden loss of consciousness (with serious arrhythmias)

Risk Factors

Recent viral infection
Young male sex (more common)
Presence of an autoimmune disease
Certain medications (anthracyclines, immune checkpoint inhibitors)
Intense physical activity during the acute phase
COVID-19 infection

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If chest pain and palpitations develop after a viral infection
  • If shortness of breath is progressively worsening
  • Go to the emergency department for fainting or loss of consciousness
  • In young athletes with chest pain after exertion
  • If symptoms intensify after a diagnosis has been made

Treatment Methods

01
Physical rest (avoiding sports and strenuous exercise in the acute phase)
02
ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers (to support cardiac function)
03
Diuretics (if there is fluid overload)
04
Immunosuppressive therapy for autoimmune myocarditis (in selected cases)
05
Antiarrhythmic therapy or an ICD for rhythm disturbances
06
Mechanical support devices or heart transplantation in advanced heart failure
