What is Mitral Valve Prolapse?

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a structural anomaly in which one or both leaflets of the mitral valve — located between the left atrium and left ventricle — displace into the left atrium during systole.

MVP, seen in about 2–3% of the general population, usually follows a benign course. However, when the valve leaflets are thickened, it can predispose to mitral regurgitation and, rarely, arrhythmias.

Echocardiography is the gold standard for diagnosis and follow-up. Asymptomatic patients usually require no treatment; periodic cardiology check-ups are sufficient.

Symptoms

Often produces no symptoms
Palpitations and irregular heartbeat
Atypical chest pain or pressure
Fatigue and exercise intolerance
Dizziness and anxiety
A click and murmur on auscultation (found on examination)

Risk Factors

Genetic predisposition (familial occurrence)
Connective tissue diseases (Marfan, Ehlers–Danlos syndromes)
Thin body habitus and kyphosis
Female sex
Symptom frequency can increase with advancing age

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • For echocardiography when a murmur or click is detected
  • For cardiology evaluation if palpitations or fainting occur
  • For regular echocardiographic follow-up if mitral regurgitation develops
  • If symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear

Treatment Methods

01
In asymptomatic mild cases, periodic echocardiographic follow-up only
02
Beta-blockers for palpitations
03
Surgical repair or replacement if severe mitral regurgitation develops
04
Appropriate antiarrhythmic therapy if arrhythmias are present
05
Endocarditis prophylaxis (only in selected cases)
