What is Comprehensive Management of Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a clinical picture in which central obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension coexist on a background of insulin resistance. According to IDF criteria, diagnosis requires central obesity (waist circumference >94 cm in men, >80 cm in women) plus at least two additional criteria.

Metabolic syndrome increases cardiovascular disease risk 2-3 fold and type 2 diabetes risk 5 fold. It is also associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome and some cancer types.

Lifestyle changes (weight loss, regular exercise, healthy diet) form the foundation of treatment. Each component should be targeted individually to minimize cardiovascular risk.

Symptoms

Central obesity (fat accumulation around the abdomen)
High blood pressure
Elevated fasting blood glucose
High triglycerides
Low HDL cholesterol
Acanthosis nigricans (dark, velvety areas on the skin — a sign of insulin resistance)

Risk Factors

Sedentary lifestyle
Western-style diet (processed foods, sugary drinks)
Obesity (especially central obesity)
Genetic predisposition
Polycystic ovary syndrome
Sleep apnea

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If waist circumference measurements exceed threshold values
  • If a disorder of glucose or lipids is detected in blood tests
  • If high blood pressure is noticed
  • If there is early-onset heart disease in the family

Treatment Methods

01
Weight loss (5-10% — significantly improves metabolic parameters)
02
Mediterranean diet or DASH diet
03
At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week
04
Metformin (in prediabetes — with individual assessment)
05
Statin (if cardiovascular risk is high)
06
Antihypertensive therapy (target <130/80 mmHg)

Endokrinoloji

Cushing syndrome is an endocrine disorder presenting with central obesity, striae, hypertension, and metabolic disturbances due to chronic glucocorticoid excess; its diagnosis is challenging.

Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma

Endokrinoloji

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are rare tumors that secrete excess catecholamines, causing paroxysmal hypertension, headache, sweating, and palpitations.

Endokrinoloji

Primary hyperaldosteronism is a treatable cause of resistant hypertension and hypokalemia caused by excessive aldosterone secretion from the adrenal gland.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Hypopituitarism

Endokrinoloji

Hypopituitarism is a deficiency of pituitary hormone production that leads to multiple endocrine organ failures and requires lifelong hormone replacement.
