What is LMNA Cardiomyopathy?

LMNA cardiomyopathy is the cardiac phenotype of the laminopathy spectrum caused by LMNA gene mutations. Cardiac involvement is also seen in Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy and other laminopathies.

Characteristically, conduction disease appears first, followed by atrial arrhythmias, dilated cardiomyopathy and ventricular arrhythmias. The risk of sudden cardiac death is very high.

Early ICD implantation (with two or more risk factors) carries a class I recommendation. Heart transplantation may frequently be needed.

Symptoms

Palpitations
Syncope
Atrioventricular block
Heart failure
Muscle weakness
Contractures
Arrhythmia

Risk Factors

Family history
Positive LMNA mutation
History of Emery-Dreifuss
Atrial arrhythmia
Early conduction disease
Male sex (faster progression)
EF < 45%
