What is Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy?

Left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy is a rare form caused by incomplete compaction of the myocardium during embryonic cardiac development. It is listed as 'classified' in the WHO classification.

It is characterized by excessive trabeculation, deep intertrabecular recesses and a two-layered myocardium (compact and non-compact). Diagnosis is based on echocardiographic and cardiac MRI criteria.

The clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic to heart failure, arrhythmia and thromboembolism. It is genetically heterogeneous, with genes such as MYH7, MYBPC3, TAZ and LDB3 implicated.

Symptoms

Heart failure
Arrhythmias
Thromboembolic events
Exertional dyspnea
Chest pain
Syncope
Palpitations

Risk Factors

Family history
Genetic mutation
Associated neuromuscular disease
Early-onset cardiomyopathy
History of thromboembolism
Complex congenital heart disease
Chromosomal anomalies
