What is Hyperlipidemia and Statin Therapy?

Hyperlipidemia is a condition in which LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, or triglycerides in the blood are elevated. Deposition of LDL cholesterol in arterial walls is the core mechanism of atherosclerosis.

Primary hyperlipidemia can be genetic (familial hypercholesterolemia is the most severe form) or lifestyle-related; secondary hyperlipidemia arises from diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, and certain medications.

Statins effectively reduce LDL cholesterol and are well-tolerated medications that lower cardiovascular event risk. Guidelines set LDL targets based on individual risk level.

Symptoms

Usually produces no symptoms
Xanthomas (yellow fatty deposits around joints) — especially in familial forms
Corneal arcus (white ring in the cornea)
Xanthelasma (yellow plaques around the eyelids)
In severe hypertriglyceridemia, signs of pancreatitis
Symptoms of atherosclerosis in advanced disease

Risk Factors

Family history of hypercholesterolemia or early cardiovascular disease
Diet high in saturated and trans fats
Sedentary lifestyle and obesity
Diabetes and hypothyroidism
Use of corticosteroids and certain antihypertensive drugs

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • For cardiology or internal medicine referral when routine tests show high cholesterol
  • With family history of early heart disease or suspected familial hypercholesterolemia
  • If side effects such as muscle pain develop on statin therapy
  • For additional treatment options when the LDL target is not reached

Treatment Methods

01
Statins (atorvastatin, rosuvastatin — first-line therapy)
02
Ezetimibe (in combination or for statin intolerance)
03
PCSK9 inhibitors (in high-risk or statin-refractory cases)
04
Dietary change: reduce saturated and trans fats, increase fiber
05
Regular exercise and weight loss
