What is Heart Transplant Follow-up?

Heart transplantation improves survival and quality of life in patients with advanced heart failure. Success depends on preventing rejection, controlling infection and managing comorbidities.

During the first year, acute cellular and antibody-mediated rejection, opportunistic infections and early allograft dysfunction are the main challenges. In the long term, cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), renal failure, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and malignancies are common.

Follow-up includes regular clinical assessment, endomyocardial biopsy, coronary angiography, echocardiography, immunosuppressant drug level monitoring, infection prophylaxis and cancer screening. Close collaboration with a multidisciplinary transplant team is essential.
