What is Coronary CT Plaque Characterization?

Coronary CT plaque characterization uses advanced CT software to assess the morphology and composition of atherosclerotic plaques. Positive remodeling, low-attenuation plaque, spotty calcification and the napkin-ring sign indicate high-risk plaque.

High-risk plaque features are associated with acute coronary syndrome. The SCOT-HEART trial showed that detection of these features is associated with statin initiation and reduction in cardiovascular events.

The method moves beyond stenosis severity and targets plaque biology, supporting personalized prevention strategies.
