What is Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Scores?

Cardiovascular risk assessment scores estimate 10-year fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular event risk in asymptomatic individuals. The 2021 ESC guideline recommends SCORE2 (40-69 years) and SCORE2-OP (>=70 years).

Age, gender, smoking status, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol are the basic parameters. Lifestyle interventions and statin/antihypertensive treatment decisions are made according to the risk category.

Symptoms

Risk assessment is for asymptomatic individuals
Secondary prevention is applied in patients with known CVD

Risk Factors

Age and gender
Smoking
Hypertension
Total cholesterol / HDL ratio
Diabetes mellitus
Family history of premature CVD

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Risk assessment in asymptomatic individuals over 40
  • When statin and antihypertensive treatment decisions are required
  • Additional risk markers (CAC score) in borderline-risk patients

Treatment Methods

01
Calculation of 10-year CVD risk with SCORE2
02
Low risk (<5%): lifestyle changes
03
Moderate risk (5-10%): lifestyle + risk modifiers (CAC, ABI)
04
High risk (10-20%): statin + antihypertensive evaluation
05
Very high risk (>=20%): aggressive risk factor control
06
Risk modifiers: hsCRP, family history, ethnicity
