What is Cardiac CT Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR-CT)?

FFR-CT is a non-invasive technique that uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applied to coronary CT angiography images to calculate fractional flow reserve. It evaluates the functional significance of a lesion.

The PLATFORM, PROMISE and ADVANCE registries have shown that FFR-CT reduces the need for invasive angiography and revascularization. Guidelines support its use in intermediate-to-high risk patients.

The method reduces hospital costs, limits unnecessary invasive procedures and supports clinical decision-making. It has been recognized by NICE as cost-effective technology.

Symptoms

Stable chest pain
Atypical chest symptoms
Exertional dyspnea
Intermediate-risk features
Equivocal stenosis on coronary CT
Chest tightness
Atypical ischemic pain

Risk Factors

Intermediate-to-high pretest probability
Intermediate lesion on coronary CT
Known coronary atheroma
Multiple risk factors
Cardiovascular risk
Diabetes with chest pain
Suspected stable ischemia

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Suspected stable coronary disease
  • Intermediate lesion on coronary CT
  • Triage before invasive angiography
  • Atypical chest pain
  • Symptoms with multiple risk factors
  • Previous inconclusive non-invasive test
