What is Cardiac CT Angiography?

Cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) is an advanced radiological examination that provides non-invasive imaging of coronary arteries using intravenous contrast material. It can prevent invasive angiography in patients with low-to-intermediate risk chest pain.

Modern multi-slice CT scanners provide over 95% negative predictive value. In addition to anatomical evaluation, functional ischemia assessment can be performed with FFR-CT.

Symptoms

Atypical chest pain
Cases where stress testing gives inconclusive results
Low-to-intermediate probability of coronary artery disease
Rapid evaluation of acute chest pain in the emergency department

Risk Factors

Contrast material allergy
Kidney failure (contrast nephropathy risk)
Uncontrolled arrhythmia (reduced image quality)
Morbid obesity (technical difficulty)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Coronary artery evaluation in low-to-intermediate risk chest pain
  • When stress testing gives ambiguous results
  • In suspected coronary anomaly
  • Coronary mapping before cardiac surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Coronary plaque characterization with CCTA
02
Functional ischemia assessment with FFR-CT
03
Calcium scoring (Agatston score)
04
Referral to invasive angiography in positive findings
05
Initiation of statin and antiplatelet therapy (when plaque is detected)
06
Risk factor modification and follow-up plan
